Film festivals aren't just red carpets and champagne toasts. For indie filmmakers like us, they're battlegrounds - the places where you discover if your story resonates beyond your own edit suite.
Our short film EVELYN has been making the festival rounds, and every screening teaches us something new about both the film and ourselves as filmmakers. There's nothing quite like sitting in a dark theater full of strangers watching something you poured your heart into unfold on screen.
That moment when the audience laughs at a line you worried was too subtle. The silence during a tense scene that you second-guessed in post. These aren't just validations - they're feedback. Real, unfiltered data points that shape how we approach our next project.
Why Festivals Matter for Indies
The festival circuit serves multiple purposes for independent productions. Sure, there's the prestige factor - laurels look good on posters and IMDb pages. But the real value runs deeper.
Festivals are where you meet other filmmakers grinding just as hard as you are. The cinematographer who shares their lighting trick over coffee. The producer who connects you with a sales agent. The writer who becomes your next collaborator. These aren't networking opportunities in the traditional sense - they’re real connections, built through the shared experience of creating something from nothing.
Each festival has its own personality too. Some are filmmaker-friendly, treating you like family. Others lean more toward the industry side, where buyers and distributors are actively looking for what’s next. Learning how to navigate both worlds becomes part of the journey and personal education.
The Submission Strategy
Here's something they don't tell you in film school: festival submissions cost money - a lot of it. Between entry fees, travel, accommodations, and promotional materials, the festival circuit can drain your budget fast. You have to be strategic.
We target festivals that align with our film's DNA. EVELYN is a character-driven thriller with strong female leads and Philadelphia roots, so we look for festivals that champion those elements. Premiere status matters, too. Many of the larger festivals require world or regional premieres, which means you can’t just submit everywhere all at once. You need a roadmap, knowing which festivals to prioritize early and which ones to hold for later in the campaign.
What We're Learning
Every screening of EVELYN reveals something. We've learned that our sound design hits harder in theaters with high-quality systems - something we couldn't fully appreciate in our edit bay. We've seen which story beats land universally and which require more context. We've received feedback that's already shaping how we approach the feature version.
The festival journey also reinforces why we do this work in the first place. Between screenings, we hear from audience members who connected with the story. People who saw themselves in the characters. That's the goal. Not just to make films, but to make films that matter to someone beyond ourselves.
Looking Ahead
As EVELYN continues its festival run, we’re already deep into development on what’s next. The lessons from the circuit carry into everything we do - from script decisions to production design to how we think about distribution.
This is the indie grind. You make something, you put it out into the world, you learn from it, and you make the next one better. No studio backing. No safety net. Just the belief that the stories we’re telling deserve to exist.
